  Getting to Know…

The Scott Kennedy Family

It was a cold and blustery evening when Scott, Renee, Brain and Amanda Kennedy welcomed me into their warm, inviting home. I have had the pleasure of having Renee in my Bible study class and I have been privileged to serve on Consistory with Scott, which has made them very dear to my heart. Of course Brian, age four, and Amanda, age 1, are the frosting on the cake…two of the cutest and brightest little ones around!

Scott is a son of the church and attended Bethany from age two until he went away to Westmont College.  He was born at Redlands Community Hospital and as a child he always had an interest in the media, i.e. journalism and photography (ever since he took photos of his parents home being remodeled).  At Redlands High School he participated in speech, a tribute to his mom Martha Kennedy the speech team coach for 20+ years, and track, a tribute to his dad Dennis Kennedy who coached the track and field team.  He went to Westmont College after high school and got more than a degree there…he also won the heart of a lovely Miss named Renee.

Renee was born in Modesto and her ambition, as a young girl, was merchandising, business and photography (she was always the one behind the camera on family vacations).  She decided early on that she did not want to be a journalist when she found out how dangerous it could be.  She was a young entrepreneur and shared with me one of her early moneymaking ideas:  Her father, who worked for the Hallmark Card Company, had several of his samples at home which Renee and her friend found and decided to sell door-to-door.  They were doing well and had each earned $1.10 when her father found out and let her know that what she was doing was illegal.  Back they went to all her customers to return the money and reclaim their merchandise.  Ya gotta love her spunk!

Lisa Robbins, the daughter of Clifford and Nancy Robbins, introduced Scott and Renee while they were in their sophomore year at Westmont College.  They dated but by graduation had not made a commitment to each other and so they parted and went their own ways, Renee to the Grand Tetons and Scott took on several different jobs.  Eventually they both ended up in Colorado where one worked at Vail ski resort and the other at Breckenridge.  True love found a way and they have now been married for seven years.

A few years later Brian made an appearance. He is a bright young man who enjoys riding his bike, playing construction with his blocks and is learning to read. His ambition is to be a garbage truck driver and he already is a good friend with one of the drivers for Redlands.  He is a terrific big brother to little sister Amanda who is also very clever.  At one year old she already knows all her colors and her mom says she is very artistic.  She is perfecting her vocabulary and right now her favorite words are yellow and armadillo.

Scott and Renee’s hobbies and interests are varied: family time, competitive biking, winter sports, and photography.  In fact, their interest in photography has grown into a family business, Kennedy Photo Works.  They shoot sporting events, weddings, graduations, family portraits, etc.

Scott is now a teacher at Yucaipa High School where he teaches English and journalism classes.  His journalism class put together our Bethany pictorial directory for us.  He is also a Deacon, is on the Executive Board, chairman of the Caring Committee, works on the sound board, and is involved with the men’s choir.  He is also helping with an after-school Christian ministry at YHS.

Renee was an Education Specialist for AAA before becoming a full-time Mom, a job she loves with all her heart.  She is currently the MOPS Coordinator, works in the nursery, and coordinates the Adopt-a-Family program at Christmas.

As you can see the Kennedy’s are a busy family but have made their Christian faith a priority.  Their favorite Bible verse is Galatians 5:22-23.  They believe that our life should be spent listening to God’s leading and following Him because of God’s great love for us, no matter what.  They love being a part of Bethany where they enjoy lots of friends and family….or should I say friends that are family, the Bethany family.
